Common faults
What Usually Goes Wrong with an EV Charger
Most of the calls we get come down to one of these. The symptom is what you see, the cause is what is usually behind it, and none of it is worth guessing at from a distance.
The charger keeps tripping the switchboard
Usually caused by
Usually a fault in the circuit, a breaker that is undersized for the charger, or moisture getting somewhere it should not.
What we do
We test the circuit and the unit under load to find which of the three it is, then repair or replace the part at fault.
It is charging much slower than it used to
Usually caused by
Often a setting that has changed after an update, a load limit that has been applied, or a connection that has worked loose over time.
What we do
We check the settings and measure what the unit is actually drawing, then go looking for the cause on the circuit.
The cable or the plug is damaged
Usually caused by
Tethered leads take a beating, especially where a cable has been run over or left on the ground.
What we do
We check whether the lead is a replaceable part on your model and fit a new one, or replace the unit if it is not.
It has dropped off the app or the wi-fi
Usually caused by
A router change, a firmware update, or a unit that is too far from the access point to hold a signal.
What we do
We reconnect and recommission it, and tell you if the fix is a better signal at the charger instead.
It stopped after work was done on the house
Usually caused by
Switchboard work, a solar install or a meter change can leave the charger circuit isolated or reconfigured.
What we do
We trace the circuit back to the board, find what changed, and put the charger back into service.
It throws an error code and will not start
Usually caused by
Every brand codes faults differently, and the code usually narrows it to the unit, the circuit or the car.
What we do
We read the code against the manufacturer's documentation and test from there, so the diagnosis is not a guess.
The visit
What Happens When We Come Out
Before we arrive
You tell us what it is doing
The brand, the age and the symptom. It lets us bring the right parts and read up on the model before we get there.
On site
We test the charger and the circuit
The unit, the circuit feeding it and the switchboard, because the fault is not always in the thing that stopped working.
Before any work
You get told what is wrong
What the fault is, what it will take to fix, and whether the unit is worth repairing at its age. You decide from there.
After the repair
It is tested and put back in service
Tested to AS/NZS 3000 and checked under a real charge before we leave. Our workmanship is covered for ten years.
What we do
Repairs, Upgrades and Relocations
Not every call is a broken charger. These are the three reasons people ring us about a unit that is already on the wall.
Repairs and fault finding
Something has stopped, tripped or slowed down and you want it working again. We diagnose it first and quote the repair once we know what it is.
Switchboard and supply upgrades
Your charger is limited by the board it runs off, or the board has been flagged as non compliant. We bring it up to standard so the charger can run at its rated output.
Moving a charger
The unit is in the wrong place, you have changed where the car parks, or you are renovating. We relocate it and make good the old position.
Warranty claims
If the Unit Itself Has Failed
Chargers do fail inside their warranty period, and the claim process is usually the slowest part of getting one replaced.
We diagnose the fault and document it the way the manufacturer needs it documented.
We lodge the claim with the manufacturer and follow it through.
We install the replacement when it arrives and commission it properly.
If we installed the charger in the first place, our own workmanship warranty covers the electrical side of it for ten years.
Common questions
EV Charger Repair Questions
Yes. We service and repair every brand we install, which covers most of what is on Gold Coast walls.
If it turns out to be a brand we cannot get parts for, we will tell you that on the day and talk through the options.
Usually one of three things: a fault on the circuit, a breaker that is undersized for the charger, or moisture getting into the unit or the isolator.
It needs testing under load to tell them apart, which is why we test the circuit and the charger together instead of replacing parts and hoping.
Sometimes. It depends on the fault, the age of the unit and whether parts are still available for the model.
We will give you the honest answer on the day, including when the sensible move is a new unit on the circuit you already have.
It depends what is limiting it. If the unit is capable of more and the supply is there, the limit is often a setting or the circuit it runs on.
If your property is single phase, the ceiling is around 7kW whatever the charger is rated at. We will tell you which situation you are in.
Yes. We relocate chargers regularly, usually after a renovation or a change in where the car parks.
It is a new circuit run to the new position, the unit remounted and recommissioned, and the old position made good.
Quite possibly. Switchboard work, a solar install or a meter change can leave the charger circuit isolated or reconfigured.
We trace the circuit back to the board, find what changed and put it back into service.
Yes. We diagnose the fault, document it the way the manufacturer requires, lodge the claim and follow it through.
When the replacement arrives we install and commission it.
