Frequently Asked Questions
These are the questions we get asked on nearly every quote. If yours is not here, send it through with a photo of your meter box and we will answer it properly.
Cost and quoting
What goes into the price, and how long the job takes.
Three things: which charger you pick, the distance from your switchboard to where the car parks, and whether the board needs work before a charger can go on it. The site assessment settles all three, and the quote includes the charger, the install and any board upgrade, so the price you agree to is the price you pay.
Room and compliance in the meter board, whether it is single or three phase, what solar or battery is already on the property, how far the board sits from where the car parks, somewhere safe to mount it that a car cannot clip, and whether the network needs to approve it. Every surprise on an EV job comes from one of those six, so they get checked first rather than discovered on install day.
Most wall chargers are done in one day on site. A long cable run, a switchboard upgrade or a multi-bay commercial job takes longer. Once the deposit is paid, we are usually on site within one to two weeks.
Power supply and switchboards
Three phase power, switchboard upgrades, the off switch beside the charger, called an isolator, and network approval.
No. Single phase runs a charger up to about 7kW, which is enough for most homes. You only need three phase for 11kW or 22kW charging. Your meter box tells us which you have, and we check it before we quote.
Only if it is missing something. A charger needs a board with a compliant main switch, neutral link and isolation link, and enough room with the right clearances. We check all of that first, and if work is needed it is in the quote, not a surprise on the day.
It is the AC isolator, the off switch for the charger, and it is required so the power can be cut at the wall in an emergency. It cannot be left off, but we put it where it is least in the way and keeps the wall tidy.
We do. Larger installs need approval from the network, which can ask for a relay so it can reduce the charger's load when the grid is busy, the same as it does for air conditioning and solar. Skipping it gets jobs knocked back. Every install we do meets AS/NZS 3000 and AS/NZS 5139.
Chargers and charging
Speed, solar, and which charger to put on the wall.
A 7kW home charger adds around 40km of range an hour, against roughly 10 to 15km from a standard 10A power point. Three phase chargers go faster again, but your car's onboard charger sets the limit, so a bigger wall unit is not always a faster charge.
Start with what you already have: your power supply, your car, and any solar or battery on the property. The charger that fits those is the right one. We install Ocular, zappi, Tesla, Sigenergy, Sungrow, GoodWe and EcoFlow, and the Brands page explains what each one suits.
Yes. Every charger we install can put your spare solar into the car instead of selling it back to the grid for a few cents. With a home battery as well, the car can charge from the battery at night instead of from the grid.
With the right hardware, yes. Bidirectional charging, V2H and V2G, is real and the Sigenergy EVDC we install is ready for it. Whether your car supports it is the other half of the answer, and it varies by make and model.
Properties and areas we cover
Homes, apartments, workplaces, and where on the coast we work.
Yes: workplaces, shops, hotels, strata buildings and fleet car parks. That includes sub boards, load management across several bays, data feeds and signage. We are the predominant Queensland installer for Ohmie Go, whose chargers are in hotels across Brisbane and the Gold Coast.
Everywhere from Coolangatta and Tweed in the south, through Burleigh, Robina, Southport and Helensvale, up to Coomera, Pimpama and Ormeau. We also go north into Logan and Brisbane.
Warranty
What is covered after we leave.
Our workmanship, for ten years from the day it goes in: the wiring, terminations, switchboard changes, mounting, conduits and switchgear. If the charger itself fails, that is a manufacturer warranty claim, and we do the diagnostics and paperwork to lodge it for you.
