Most of Southport was built well before home EV charging existed, which is why the switchboard is usually the first thing we check. A lot of the housing west of the highway went up between the fifties and the eighties, when a switchboard only had to run a stove, a hot water service and some lights.
In practice that means two things. The supply is usually single phase, which caps you at around 7kW, and the board itself often has no spare space and no residual current protection on the circuits that matter. Neither of these stops you having a charger installed. Both are priced into the quote, so there are no surprises on install day.
The second Southport habit is where things sit. On the older blocks the meter box is at the front boundary and the car ends up parked at the back or under a carport down the side, so the cable run is long before anything else is decided. We measure the run on site before pricing the job. On an older Southport block it can cost more than the charger itself.
In a unit block or high-rise the electrical work is usually straightforward. The time goes into agreeing with the body corporate where the charger draws its power from and how it is metered back to you. Start that conversation early.
